WAIQ TV Studios

Officially at 1255 Madison Avenue, but as you can see, it’s actually tucked into the back left corner of the Paterson Field parking lot. Two forsaken entities side by side, the TV studio on the left, the edge of the baseball stadium on the right. Alabama Public Television was established in 1953, and by the ‘70s it had nine stations on the air. In the 1960s Alabama led the Nation in the formation of a broadcast network for its “educational television system”. Montgomery’s Station WAIQ went on the air in 1962, but budget cuts led the APT network to close the Montgomery outlet last year. Probably our station was selected because its demise would have the greatest political impact.
