Salvation Army Headquarters

At 900 Bell Street (now Maxwell Boulevard). The Army is a Protestant Church based, international movement started in London in 1865. Its Montgomery headquarters moved out onto Bell Street in the early 1970s, and some years later replaced its original building at that site with this (almost too elegant) structure. Isn’t it ironic that the Salvation Army, with its soup kitchen, homeless shelter and thrift store, moved to this rather ideal location (for them) on the street of derelicts, only to have the City come along to rename Bell Street and turn it into a grand avenue on which all of the Army constituents will be uncomfortable.
