Avenue of Flags

The flags form the circular drive which enables dignitaries to be dropped off at the South Entrance to our State Capitol. Each pole displays the State Flag of a sister state, and at the bottom of each pole is a native stone of that State engraved with its name. The aluminum flagpoles were made from metal produced in NW Alabama by the Reynolds Aluminum Co which founded that industry. And while I’m only guessing, I’d say the circular walk was paved with Belgian granite paving stones, shipped here as ballast on empty trade ships returning from Europe 150 years ago, and salvaged from some Montgomery street resurfacing project. The avenue was dedicated in 1968 by then Governor, Albert Brewer.
