Court Street Methodist Church

Court Street Methodist

…the one that was demolished ca 1931 to make way for the new Post Office. It looks pretty grand to me. My mother-in-law was married in this church in 1925. The congregation moved out to the new suburb called Cloverdale and built the First Methodist Church that we know today.

While this pictured edifice was built about the time of the Civil War, this corner had been the site of a church since 1820, when the small wood frame structure there was a community church shared by Presbyterians, Methodists and Baptists. Shortly before the pictured edifice was built, the Methodists (who owned it then) planted a Colored church, and offered the early frameĀ  structure to its stepchild, provided the latter would move it to another site.
