Bellinger Hill Elementary School 9

Bellinger Hill

was built in 1904, and appears to be mostly Italianate Style. Today it serves our system as the Department of Special Ed, but in its day it generated as many cherished memories as any building in our city.

The school had dedicated teachers, put on plays, was famous for May Pole dances. You could get a hot lunch for 15-cents. My wife attended Bellinger circa 1940, and mention of the name always brought a flood of happy memories.  Besides May, distinguished alum included the Seay twins, the Waldo brothers, Jean Upchurch, Billie Clair Mangum, Betty Meriwether, Dubo Harper and Luther Waller.

I went to Bellinger Hill School in the 3rd grade in 1948. I grew up to teach the 3rd through 7th grades for many years in California. They don’t build schools today that last as long as Bellinger Hill. What a shame.

I went there in 1957, in the second grade and I think part of the 3rd grade, it was an old school then, but I loved it. I remember the cafeteria and those wooden, oiled floors. My teacher in the second grade was MissTaylor. We lived on Finley Ave. Moved to Perry Hills and had to rise the bus to another old school Capital Heights Elem that has since burned.

I started the first grade at Bellinger Hill in 1948, my teacher was Ms Allen. Also went 2 more years with Ms Lock and Ms Carmichael as my teachers. I lived a few blocks away on Finley Ave. A lot of good memories. We moved to Oak Park and I transferred to Forest Avenue in the 4th grade.

I attended 4th grade there in 1958. Vaguely remember making friends with a girl with long blonde hair named Gay. During that summer my brother and I entertained ourselves walking on the ledge above the ground around the bldg. I also remember on several occasions the pigeons pooping in my hair as I entered the bldg!!!

I went to Bellinger Hill in the 1st and second grade, 1962 and 1963. I had Ms Brown (1st), and Ms Gay (2nd). I remember that I love the way it always smelled, like old books and pencil shavings.
