…founded 1903, is situated on Narrow Lane Road at the head of Fairview Avenue. Their present handsome clubhouse (pictured) is pseudo Greek Revival, called that because its exterior is synthetic stucco on Styrofoam. Their first club, built 1905, was on Carter Hill at the head of Narrow Lane. Their second clubhouse (below) sat directly in front of this one, and was demolished upon completion of the present building, circa 1990. The second facility gave 60-plus years of faithful service and was much loved by all the members; not so much by those who had to maintain it. I was a member here for 25 years.
The second Montgomery Country Club . . . From an ancient picture postcard. I would guess 1920. Both Narrow Lane and Fairview appear unpaved. This clubhouse was demolished circa 1990, after 60-odd years of service. My last project assignment, ’twas 1955, with my first (and last) employer was to completely remodel this structure. We added the dining/ballroom, the lounge bar, the golf bar, family dining room and the patio pool. My children sort of grew up around the pool. Needless to say, I had a love-hate relationship with this old building.
