Archibald Tyson Place

The Archibald Tyson place… the west side of which was sold off circa 1965 to become Tyson Manor, Montgomery’s premier nursing home for decades. And the east side, including this manor house, became St James School circa 1970. This house served as the school administrative building (Frazer Hall); a classroom building was built behind the house, a gym in its front yard, and the school library to its left. Back then the house was painted white, and these few acres were a swinging place. It was great entertainment for the nursing home patients to line up in rockers on their front porch and watch the antics of the students. I find the old campus to abound with memories, and driving by without stopping to reminisce is impossible. Up until 1965, the street in the foreground was only the entrance drive up to the house, extending from Carter Hill Road some 300 yards, and the driveway became North Country Club Drive when the nursing home was built. My belief today (it changes often) is that this Archibald Tyson was the son of the Lowndesboro planter who moved to town and in 1888 built the Tyson House on the corner of High and McDonough?
