Alleyway Tank


This historic water tank is one of Downtown Montgomery’s last and also the most unique. While also being older than a century, this water tank is still operational and grounded so all the tourists and locals can visit!

This historic site was not always “grounded,” The Alleyway Tank was engineered to be a rooftop water tank that would provide water pressure in case a fire ever started. Back in the day, these water tanks could also provide many other uses throughout the each building they were located. These water tanks were spread throughout the United States and some even still exist today. It was mandatory for water tanks to be on buildings larger than six stories.

The Tank is located on Lower Commerce Street of Downtown Montgomery. It provides an amazing entrance to a great bar and a good time! Even though the Alleyway Tank is on the ground, it is not the only tank still around. There is another tank on the roof a few yards away from the Alleyway Tank. No one knows whether if that tank still works, but it is indeed still standing as well!

I am very impressed that it is still standing after all of these years! It is in a nice location and I would also recommend visiting this tour site. The food is great, the nightlife is fun, and you can’t forget seeing the tank at the entrance! — Shan Core

In 2009, the Alleyway Tank was moved from the rooftop of the alley bar to the street itself. It made history because it was placed between Montgomery’s classical warehouses, Winter Loeb and Steiner-Lobman, which are also amongst the historical places downtown. Montgomery also had to break its own procedures make this all possible. There was a big debate on moving the tank from the rooftop, but it eventually was approved and moved to the ground. The Alleyway Tank is the first to touch the ground and still works to this day!
