Montgomery Academy

MA Bridge

The Montgomery Academy was founded in 1959 by a small group of well-off Montgomery families who were determined to provide a quality substitute for the doomed public school system. For the first few years it held classes on Perry Street in the former “Sable Governor’s Mansion“. Just ahead of I-85 construction, which took the old mansion in 1963, the school relocated to its present campus at 3240 Vaughn Road. The school has enjoyed a slow but continuous growth, which, in 2006 finally forced it to expand across the high-traffic Vaughn Road onto the former grounds of the Masonic Home. That step necessitated the pedestrian bridge in the picture. Two of my daughters attended the Academy for a few years, but while it was and is a very fine institution, neither one seemed to enjoy the social experience.

Around 1988 the Academy undertook a major expansion by opening its Lower School Campus (below) on Perry Hill Road. Unfortunately, its entrance drive opens onto what has to be the most aggravating intersection in all of Montgomery.
