Lampliter Dinner Theater 1

This rather ordinary metal building at 6000 Monticello Drive may not deserve much attention, but it holds big memories for some of us. It was put up in the early 1970s, and for well over a decade it was the home of the Lampliter Dinner Theater. It featured tiered seating in the round, and white tablecloths; alcohol was available, the food was passable, the actors were paid professionals, and if you arrived after dark it was mighty impressive. On more than one occasion, my firm bought the house for a night, and we invited our clients from around the State to join us for an evening of “big city” theatergoing. College and bank presidents, town and county officials, politicians of all tiers, every school superintendant, they all came, some driving hundreds of miles. But around 1985, a departing couple was involved in a fatal auto accident, the Lampliter was sued, and its doors closed forever. In 1990 this building was the home of WMCF-TV, Montgomery’s religious television station. In 1992 the Christian Life Church purchased the building and resides there today.

I brought my 8th grade class, from Queen of Mercy School, to a play performed in the Lampliter Dinner Theater, Montgomery, AL during the year 1976-77. I can’t recall the name of that play, but it was a wonderful experience for the students. Would love to know the name of that play. Anyone remember that play? Thanks!
